Google Opens a Digital Music Store

Looking to extend its reach as a hub for entertainment and social networking, Google introduced a set of music features on Wednesday, including a download store to compete with iTunes. NEXT

MY COMMENT

Google is entering a new market, the music one. Already dominated by Apple who came first with Itunes a decade ago. The service, Google Music, will sell individual tracks and full albums, letting customers store the songs on servers, on so-called cloud accounts. And through an integration with Google’s nascent social network, Google+, the company will also let customers share music by offering friends one free listen to any bought track.

By launching its new service, Google is clearly competing with Apple who is dominating the market. However, Google Music has only for the moment a database of 13 million songs, and could not reach an agreement with Warner music one of the most important music majors in the industry. On the other hand, Itunes with its very large database, its new cloud service, and most important the fact that all owners of Ipods and Iphones have to own an itunes library to use their device, offers more attractiveness than Google Music

To end up, Google music is not a revolution, just an Itunes like, and if google wants to dominate the music digital store market, it should absolutely find other ways that will interest the customer to switch from Itunes to Google Music.

  1. Itunes certainly has many adventages for the moment in comparison to Google Music. It might stay so. Still, what do the numbers say? How many people use iTunes? What is the potential number of Google music users? Are those the same people or is it possible we are talking about different target audiences?
